Sri Lanka Rubber Product

Started in 1876, with the planting of 1,919 rubber seedlings at the Henerathgoda Botanical Gardens in Gampaha, Sri Lankan that became the origin of an uninterrupted and profitable supply chain of an agricultural commodity, Sri Lanka, the cradle of the global rubber revolution and one of the eleven natural rubber growing countries in the world,

The traditional rubber growing areas of Sri Lanka is located mainly in the wet zone in a land extent of 127,500 hectares. The country’s traditional rubber growing districts include Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kandy, Matale, Galle, Matara, Kurunegala, Rathnapura, and Kegalle.

Sri Lanka’s rubber exports have diminished from 120,900 metric tons in 1980 to a mere 16,300 metric tons in 2014, as per the statistics provided by the Rubber Research Institute of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka’s rubber cultivation has got limited to a mere 133,000 hectares and produced only 98,570 metric tons of natural rubber in the year 2014.

In the meantime, Thailand, the world’s leading exporter of natural rubber has 3,138,170 hectares of rubber and produced 4.5 million tons in the year 2016 with a yield 4.44 tons per hectare.

Sri Lanka produces about 153,000 metric tons of natural rubber annually. Rubber is manufactured in a variety of traditionally acceptable grades that are absorbed by the markets.

Sri Lanka produces almost all types of Natural Rubber (NR) available in the market including: Ribbed Smoked Sheet (RSS), Latex Crepe, Sole Crepe, Scrap Crepe, all grades of Technically Specified Rubber (TSR), Specialty Rubbers and Latex Concentrate.

These range from extrusion products such as rubber bands, beadings, latex products such as medical, industrial and household gloves, industrial products such as hoses, auto parts, industrial components, tyres, tubes, automotive and aviation tyres and general rubber products such as floor mats, carpets, sports goods, footwear, hot water bottles and related components.

Latex Based Products

Latex products include rubber gloves, hygienic or pharmaceutical articles, latex thread and articles of apparel & clothing products.

Dry Rubber- based Products

Solid rubber products mainly consist of two categories, namely tyre and non-tyre. Tyre sector includes pneumatic tyres, solid tyres and tread materials. In the dry rubber sector, tyre category dominates the non-tyre sector .

Natural Rubber

Sri Lankan Natural Rubber is exported both in the raw & value added form. The country now has a premium quality natural rubber type known as Lanakprene which is an odour free to a certain extend light coloured, clean, rubber which is ideally suited for medical equipment and up market, value added products .

Motorcycle tyres are categorized into two types; viz. road tyres and off road tyres. Road tyres are designed for more miles, better handling, grip and safety by positioning hard and soft rubber where needed. United States is the major importer of Sri Lankan pneumatic tyres.

Solid or Cushion Tyres

primarily used in material handling vehicles in areas such as airports, ports and transporting goods for storage. Sri Lanka has developed into a center for the production of solid industrial tyres and is the number one exporter of solid tyres which accounts for approximately 20% of global market share at present. USA is the largest importer of solid tyre from Sri Lanka. Belgium, Germany, Italy are the other major importers of solid tyre products.

Non-tyre sector

The non tyre sector manufacturers are also specialized in moulded rubber products and accessories used in the industries-rubber bands, hoses, auto parts, industrial components such as beadings, gaskets, washers.

General rubber products such as carpets, floor mats, sport goods, footwear, hot water bottles and related components .
